An alarm system is often the core element of a property's security system. The primary purpose of a security alarm is to promptly notify the property owner or security service of any unauthorized entry into the protected facility. Security alarm systems vary in the design and operating principles of their sensors, signal transmission methods, and the features of their signal analysis and security alert systems.

Alarm system sensors operate using various principles. The simplest sensor is an electrical circuit whose interruption triggers an alarm; in this case, reed switches are typically used. Another type of sensor is an optical sensor, which can detect when an intruder crosses the beam or react to changes in optical parameters within the field of view. There are also a number of specialized alarm sensors that respond to vibration, changes in electrical capacitance, and other parameters.

In security alarm systems, information from sensors can be transmitted in various ways – via wires or radio waves, in analog or digital form. Alarm systems that transmit digital information to a centralized security console via radio are now widely used.

Analysis and notification in an alarm system can also be accomplished in various ways. The simplest method is a siren or other visual and audible alarm that alerts those nearby of an alarm being triggered. With an intelligent alarm system, signals received from sensors are analyzed by a computer system, which notifies security of an emergency and, if necessary, activates access control systems to locate the intruder.
